Feb 16, Tyler Easter rated it really liked it. Amazing way to keep someone occupied with sports and family. A wonderful short story with wisdom for all ages. The kind of selection often found in the Junior Great Books. I don't know any African-Americans who were children around , but it sounds authentic to me.
Also, the themes are timeless. I love not only the family all pulling together, and the special care given to Raymond, but the exploration of the fact that females are not as kind to one another, no matter their age, as they should be. I read A wonderful short story with wisdom for all ages.
I read an un-illustrated edition with a missing jacket; it looked like a chapbook. Raymond run is about squeaky and her brother Raymond who had special needs and how squeaky had to protect him because some people make fun of him and squeaky doesn't take anything from anybody and squeaky proves shes strong by running and she builds up walls which makes her not be able to get friends and this girl Gretchen raced squeaky and that when she realized Raymond is fast and they could work together.
Mar 11, aar. There could be spoilers. I absolutely despise Raymond's Run. I get that you're blinded by the desire to win and everything, but why do you have to diss your brother. I get that he's different, but that does not give you any right to do anything like that. And on top of not liking the story, my wonderful teacher made us write an analysis on it.

The brother Raymond is special and people laugh at him because he is helpless and can't really defend himself. He would be like that if it weren't for his sister Squeaky. Squeaky steps in for Raymond. She doesn't let anyone push him around because the only one who dies the pushing is her.
Squeaky is a character who is hard to love, she bosses people around and is very defensive, but Raymond's Run by Toni Cade Bambara is a great book. In her race, she wins but looks over to Raymond who is cheering for her and also running.

It doesn't matter what people think about you, you are a unique person. I felt bad for squeaky because she had to stand up for herself and for her older brother, she did things that a child shouldn't have to do by herself.

I read the short story then I heard there was a book. I was hoping the book would expand on the short story. It didn't. I can tell from reviews that this story is commonly read by students in schools. There are lessons to be learned from Hazel's relationship with her brother Raymond, who is intellectually disabled, and her defence of him against the mean girls in her class. Additionally Hazel runs a 50 yard dash that she has always won easily against a fierce competitor whom she doesn't like. Understandable that this is read by middle school students, but it is well worth reading for anyone. Jan 30, J V rated it did not like it.
My opinion in this book was many different feelings. At times it was interesting and the other times I was bored out of my mind. My favorite part is when she talks about her racing,that was always the part that I got interested.

Bambara earned a BA in theater arts and English literature from Queens College in , where she was one of the few non-white students. Bambara had a passion for jazz and was a member of the Dance Club of Queens College. From through the s, Bambara worked in university outreach programs and taught English, Afro-American Studies, and film-script writing at a variety of universities and institutions, including her own alma mater City College.
She was also an artist-in-residence at multiple universities and held lectures at the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution. At the beginning of the story, Squeaky comes across as a strong, no-nonsense kind of girl. She knows her capabilities on the track and is contemptuous of the new girl Gretchen, who thinks that she is a better runner than her. In fact, she is so confident of her racing skills that she is not afraid to tell.
Raymond is Squeaky's mentally challenged, intellectually disabled older brother, who acts much younger than his age suggests. Squeaky never elaborates on Raymond's intellectual disability, but one can surmise that he is intellectually deficient given his odd, immature behavior. Squeaky's intellectually disabled older brother, Raymond , is depicted as an enthusiastic boy.
He has a lively personality and follows his sister wherever she goes. The fact that Squeaky must constantly supervise and protect her brother illustrates that he is a dependent person who relies on his sister's help. During the race , as Squeaky is running her heart out, she notices that Raymond is running too. It is his first race. He is not in the race , officially, but he is. He is running with her. Squeaky is portrayed as a highly competitive adolescent who wishes to beat her new rival, Gretchen.
In regards to the setting of the story, Squeaky mentions that she lives on Harlem's st Street, races to the fire hydrants on Amsterdam Avenue, and practices her breathing exercises while she strolls down Broadway.
