Fragments of things I used to be. Wanted to be. Never could be. She cries a little, the glint of her wedding ring flashing before the camera. For some, the movies may appear as morality tales, intended to chide the creators of elaborate hoaxes.
But when women as young as 31 find themselves wondering if they are too old to successfully pursue their dreams, these films present how far a couple of unknowns with vision and audacity are willing to go to have their voices heard. Allison McCarthy September 23, Wesselman said her problems began when she looked for feedback on her artwork online, and was met with snide and stinging critiques. However, when she posed as an 8-year-old artist named Abby, people online -- namely year-old photographer Nev Schulman -- were kind and accepting.
An online correspondence began and the charade escalated when Wesselman created the character of Abby's older sister. Megan became Schulman's obsession and the core of Wesselman's growing cast of characters.
She created online profiles for at least 21 relatives and friends to round out Megan's social circle. To bring these personas to life, Angela assumed all of their identities. She posted messages on Facebook in the voice of Abby, Megan, their brother and friends, switching minute by minute.
I don't think I have multiple personalities in normal life, really. I just think I have the ability to create a lot of illusions for people. Moviegoers and critics alike have questioned "Catfish's" legitimacy. The New York Times' A. Scott scolded the filmmakers for exploiting Wesselman for their documentary -- an accusation which they and Wesselman, deny.
I was like, 'This would make a great film. But her involvement in the documentary has come at a high personal price. MTV also has yet to announce an eighth season of Catfish , but based on the evidence presented in season seven, there are fewer reasons than ever to justify its existence. And one can hardly blame them, given that Catfish has become an anthology not of hopeful people seeking love with pure intentions, but of liars trying to justify having lied to each other.
